Several unique terms and phrases describe the features of hardware we review on this site, some easier to grasp than others. This list briefly defines terms relevant to Gaming PC.
Ratings ProcessorWe graded each computer according to the central processing unit (CPU) it offers at the base price. We looked at the type, bus speed (in MHz) and cache (in MB) and allotted points accordingly. Memory We analyzed the systems memory including the RAM size and the size of the hard drive. You can typically upgrade the RAM and hard drive for higher performance. Video/Audio We considered the graphics card that comes standard with each gaming PC–taking into account the type and size (in MB). Most gaming systems allow you to upgrade your graphics card. Additionally, we took into account the computer’s audio type. I/O Device This criterion is based on the number of input/output devices included with the PC at the base price listed. Accessories may include a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers as well as optical drives and media card readers. Value/Price We determined how much computer you get for your dollar—keep in mind this is for the base price before any upgrades. Support/Warranty We ranked the manufacturers by the quality of help and support they provide via email, phone or online help. We also considered the type and length of the warranties offered. PROCESSOR AMDAMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is a global supplier of integrated circuits for the personal, networked computer and communications markets. The gaming computer has this type of AMD processor. Intel Major developer and supplier of CPUs, motherboards and other components. The computer has this type of Intel processor. CPU(GHz) A Central Processing Unit (CPU) is a programmable logic device that performs all the instruction, logic and mathematical processing in a computer. The CPU runs at this speed. Bus Speed(MHz) This is a speed measured in Megahertz and determines how fast the memory and CPU communicate. Known as system bus speed in AMD processors and front side bus (FSB) in Intel chips. MEMORY RAM Size(GB)The random–access memory (RAM) is the most common computer memory used by programs to perform necessary tasks while the computer is on. An integrated circuit memory chip allows information to be stored and accessed in any order. All storage locations are equally accessible. Hard Drive Size(GB) The primary storage unit on a PC. It consists of one or more magnetic media platters on which digital data is written and erased magnetically. The size is the amount of information in gigabits (1000 megabits) the hard drive can store. VIDEO/AUDIO Graphics Card TypeA peripheral device that attaches to the PCI or AGP slot in your computer and enables the PC to process and deliver video. Once installed in the computer, a cable attaches the graphics card to a computer monitor. Some card types include NVIDIA GeForce and Radeon. Card Memory(MB) The computer comes with some type of productivity software like Microsoft Works or Word. Audio Type Audio may be integrated or come through a soundcard, such as a Sound Blaster. Soundcards provide an elevated audio experience. Sound Configuration The 5.1 utilizes three primary channels (the left, center, right), two surround channels (left surround, right surround) and an LFE channel, which is the ".1" channel. I/O Devices CD RWThe computer will burn and play CDs. CD/DVD RW The computer will burn and play DVDs and CDs. CD ROM The computer will only play CDs. DVD ROM The computer will play CDs and DVDs but will not burn disks. Media Card Reader The computer has a media card reader. Peripherals Mouse The PC comes with a mouse. Most mouses have two buttons and a scrolling wheel for easy navigation and enhanced gaming. Optical mouses use a light beam to track the position of the cursor or pointer on the screen. Keyboard The system comes with a keyboard. Monitor Size(Inches) The size of computer monitor included in the base price of the computer. If there is no size listed, a monitor is not included. Generally, you can choose not to include the monitor and save money. Speakers Speakers are included with the computer package. Ports USB The total number of Universal Serial Bus Ports that are located on the computer tower. Some USB ports are in the rear of the tower and some in the front of the computer tower for easy access. These are a must for connecting gaming devices. FireWire(IEEE 1394) The number of Fire Wire ports on the tower. Fire Wire is a type of cabling technology for transferring data to and from digital devices at high speeds. Some professional digital cameras and memory card readers connect to computers over FireWire. FireWire card readers are typically faster than those that connect via USB. Operating System Windows XP Home The computer comes with the Windows XP Home operating system. Windows Media Center The PC comes with the Windows Media Center operating system. Windows Vista Capable The computer is capable of running the new Widows Vista. Many companies offer an easy upgrade free or for a small fee. Included Software Security Software The computer comes with some type of security software. This software is essential for safely navigating the Internet. SUPPORT/WARRANTY Warranty(yrs)The computer has a warranty that covers parts and labor. This is the length of the warranty. Phone Support The manufacturer offers a phone number you can call to receive technical support. Email Support You can contact customer support via email with any question you have.
